I actually heard about this on a science blog and thought it was a great ideaMATOMO_URL I think communicating science is an important role that scientists should frequently be engaged in. This is because we are doing some really fantastic research and people should know about it!

Alot of the money we get in order to do our research comes from the government. As such, people (both the politicians and citizens) have a big influence on where government money is spent. Science, I think, is so beneficial to society and deserves funding. If people are not aware of the signficant progress modern science is acheiving, we might not recieve the funding to do our work.

On top of all this, in order to get this awesome science done, we are going to need new researchers coming in to help out/ bring their amazing thoughts and ideas to the table. That’s why interacting with students is important as you are the next generation of scientific leaders!

      * This shows you how science is such an international career choice- I heard about this comp and decided to join all the way from Aus!

Ken’s covered the bits about the importance of communicating science because we should tell the people who fund our work what we are up to. In addition to that though, I really just enjoy discussing science with the public or in schools, I’ve done it quite a few times in the past and hope I keep finding opportunities to talk about it in the future.

Are you enjoying asking questions so far @caitlinfc? Do you like the answers you’ve heard?

Ooh I have lots of reasons:

      1. When I was at school I think it would have been fantastic to talk to scientists and see what their everyday work is like and what they are researching. It would have helped me choose my university course and what exams to take. So I think the competition is really great for this reason.

      2. I know a few people who took part last year and they all had loads of fun during the competition so I wanted to experience it.

      3. I really hope that I win because then I will have money for Non Fiction Science. So another reason I took part was to try and get money for this project.

      4. Like Ken and Indi I also think communicating science is important.

      5. I hope it will help me with my communication skills. This competition means I have to communicate my research over an over again to a large group of students and I hope this will help me get better at communicating.
