• Question: why cant we be born with purple hair rather than blonde, brown, ginger etc ?

      There is no real answer to this other than because that’s how we evolved. But that is not to say that we won’t have purple hair in the future.

      You would have to make a gene for purple hair and express it under the normal regulations for melanin (which determine our skin hair and eye colour) or it might happen by random mutation.

      You can however be born with purple eyes!

      Oooo interesting, didn’t know about purple eyes! I’d love to have purple hair but yeah, as Vicky says, the gene to make that colour in our hair doesn’t seem to be around yet!

      Anyone up for some experimental testing? We could splice some orchid DNA in you and see what happens! Note- there is no guarantee that your hair wouldn’t form petals and fall out every season.

      I’m not a biologist and I really don’t know – does any animal have purple hair?
