• Question: Why are ants so small?

      Because evolution designed them this way. Ants live in large colones so being small suits them as this means there is enough food in one area for lots of ants. Their size will also help them avoid predators as they are so tiny.

      A reason in general that insects are not much bigger is that when you’re small you can use diffusion a lot more to move fluids and oxygen around for you. To get much bigger they would have to evolve a circulatory system (heart + some kind of blood vessels) and lungs, then they wouldn’t be much like ants any more!
