One really cool experiment I did not too long ago was to grow human heart cells in a cell culture dish – when you give them just the right nutrients and temperature the heart cells actually continue to beat! How awesome is that?!
I suppose that wasn’t a new discovery though, just a personal one! Other people have done the same thing before.
The stuff that I discovered in my PhD though is linked to how eyes develop and some genes/ proteins involved in the body clock – some of the genes seem to be linked in very complicated ways. I did this by doing cloning, making transgenic fruit flies and using bright fluorescent proteins that glow when certain types of light are shone on them.
