• Question: What is the positive and negative things about your job?

      Hi bellabella1234, well, I enjoy my job and I think I’m good at it, those a defo positives. I also get to continue learning about science and have opportunities to travel to conferences abroad from time to time. You can meet lots people that do research on similar subjects and usually take a holiday at the same time after the conference is finished! This kind of job also allows you to have independence in how you work but because you always work as part of a bigger team, you get to discuss ideas and get help from others who may have found a better way of doing something.

      The negative bits are that sometimes you do have to work really long hours but it’s not all the time, and my supervisor is very good about understanding that if I have worked really long hours one day, I may need to work a shorter day the next day. Working on the body clock, I sometimes actually have to be at work in the middle of night and that’s really rubbish and tiring. Also, doing research on animals, the most horrible bit is when you have to kill them sometimes – it’s very unpleasant but the animals are very well looked after until that time. And unfortunately, at the moment, sometimes doing research on animals is necessary!

      Ooooh this might be hard.

      Negative: Sometimes you need to do the same experiments over and over again for a few months and that is really boring. Then sometimes experiments don’t work at all and you can again spend months trying to make it work. I can get very frustrated when this happens and that part sucks. But then there is much more positive parts to my job which make the negative stuff better.

      Positive: I love that my research could help people who are ill in the future and that gives me great job satisfaction. I have lots of friends at work and its lots of fun. I can make my own working hours and schedule my work how I want to do it. I get to travel a lot to conferences like Indi and then you have a great excuse for a holiday right after. I get to spend some time taking part in competitions like this one or going to schools and science festivals with activities like Non Fiction Science (This is on my profile) or the Egg and Sperm Race (I can tell you more about this if you want). Also my job might be repeptive for months on end but it is always changing in other ways which keeps it interesting. I think because I love my job it never feels like work.
