It depends how long this diet would last for, and how much food the person had ‘stored’ on their body as fat. My colleague just told me about a very fat man who survived for nearly a year on a diet of only liquids, mostly water. I don’t know if this is true though!

Calorie controlled diets definitely seem to be a way of prolonging life, but the problem is that your quality of life is not very high – you’re too exhausted to do much other than lie about + sleep!

If you eat less than 1200 calories a day then your body can go into survival mode and start to store fat as it thinks it is starving. This is a general number for everyone and will change a little from person to person. So its considered unsafe to eat less than 1200 unless your on a special diet controlled by a doctor but that’s unlikely unless you are morbidly obese.

It will vary depending on your metabolism as well. There is some genetic influence on hwo fast your metasbolism is- for example, its probably why I can get away with eating nasty take away and not gain weight as my genetic lineage (or grandad) was thin (that being said- it would eventually catch up with me if I ate takeaway every day). So I guess, its very circumstantial to the lowest amount of caleries one can eat. I think the older you get your metabolism slows down as well so age would factor into the equation as well.
