Mmm, first got me interested? I think actually it was from the point of view of the ‘smaller picture’. When I was a kid I thought machines were so cool (my first complex word was ‘tractor’!). The idea of making something that could make energy or do things seemed fantastic. My scribbled drawings from back then were all of ludicrous machines to fly to the moon, and make energy from bicycles! I don’t think I’ve changed at all inside, only I now think in terms of electrons and excitons and molecular orbitals!

I remember we used to have a calculator at home that was solar powered, but without a backup battery. If you put your fingers in front of the cell you could make the display fade away as it ran out of power. And if you shadowed it just the right amount, you could make it make mistakes as it calculate sums for you!
It seemed so amazing that light, all the way from the sun, could land on something made by man, and do something useful.

I guess when I was older, the increasing evidence of climate change, both through ever worsening simulations and actual, direct, experimental evidence, prompted me into trying to find some way to help with this in my working life.
