If VY Canis were to implode upon itself and cause a super/hypernova then could it possibly rip off the earths ozone

Question: If VY Canis were to implode upon itself and cause a super/hypernova then could it possibly rip off the earths ozone layer which would mean the radiation could disintegrate us all?

  Cool question. I had to look up the star as I hadn’t heard of it myself. Whilst it is a very unstable star and will almost certainly go supernova / hypernova at some point, it is approximately 4900 light years away from us, which is far enough away that it wouldn’t affect the Earth. Of course, it may have already gone nova, and we are jsut waiting for the light from the explosion to reach us so we can see it! 🙂
  
  It sounds like a a really interesting star, apparently it will form an enormous black hole after going nova!
