In my lab group there is around 10 of us. Is a mixture of doctors, students, lead scientists and clinicians. We all have our own areas of research but our research also overlaps greatly and we collaborate with each other. It’s great as it gives us the opportunity to work alone but we have a lot of support from each other. Out lab group is based in a centre (centre for reproductive health) which has around 10 lab groups like ours. We are all in the same building and share lab spaces. It makes it alot of fun having so many people around!

I work in an enormous department. I cannot remember exactly how many groups there are within my faculty but it’s easily over a 100, all working on different topics but with some groups working on related topics – for example, there are about 8 groups working on the body clock and about 14 groups working on fruit flies! Each group usually has students, post-docs and technicians of different numbers. And we’re all spread out over about 5 buildings. My building is very open plan, the lab and office space which is nicer than another lab I’ve worked in because, as Vicky says, it’s much more fun to have so many people around.

I do some work in a lab (maybe one day every month) but most of the time I work in an office at a computer, and sometimes on a ship (which do have labs on them! On a ship I’m in a lab most of the time ).

Yeah, apparently I work in the lab. Well, one would think that since there is a 1m desk set aside for me to use in the lab. Poor lab bench is getting lonely though 🙁 It feels like I haven’t used it in over a year. Will be heading back in there a month or 2. Time to work on my RSI (repetitive stress injury) from pipetting!!
