Yep! I finished my Thesis (the big document you write at the end of your PhD with all your findings) for the start of the Spring term 2011, and had my Viva during the Easter break.

Yes, I got my Ph.D. last year. It was a lot of hard work, but also really good training in how to be a scientist. Doing a Ph.D is more like doing a job than being a student. It can be a lot of fun though, and you get more time to study one problem (and make lots of mistakes along the way!) than you do as a ‘proper’ scientist.

Technically not yet. I finished writing my thesis on the weekend- and will be submitting it this week! Basically it has to get reviewed by external scientists, basically they judge if it is worthy to be accepted as a thesis. If they do (hopefully will get back to me in 2-3 months), then I can graduate and officially get my PhD!

Yeah, I submitted my thesis (the big book you have to write about your findings in the 3-4 years of the PhD) in January of 2011. Then after that you have what’s called a viva, basically an oral exam where they ask you lots of questions about what you’ve written to make sure you wrote it and that you understand what you wrote. The people that ask the questions are specialists in the same subject (or subjects) so they can ask very difficult questions!! I enjoyed my PhD viva though, my examiners were really nice and complimentary about my work but it is exhausting – we were talking for 4 hours (but with a short coffee break)! After the viva, sometimes the examiners suggest you make some changes and after those changes are submitted, you have a PhD!
