I think it is essentially a choice you make. I have chosen to do work that I really enjoy and think is worthwhile. I could probably find work that paid better (perhaps at a bank), but I doubt I would think it as worthwhile or find it as enjoyable. Being a scientist also takes a lot of time, so if I want to have more spare time in the future, perhaps I should think about changing career.

So yes, it is sort of a compromise – you’ve got to decide what’s the best balance for you as a person.

Well, I wouldn’t do this for free! But like Jarvist says it’s a compromise – it’s not the highest paying job that I could do but I enjoy what I do and the pay is enough for me to lead a life that I’m comfortable and happy with.

Science pay sucks quite a bit. I would say its a job of passion, I think most scientists do it because they are passionate about their research and enjoy their job rather than working for their pay check. I mean we are not poor but its unlikely that a scientist will every buy a big 5 bedroom house and go on 4 holidays a year. It is not a job that will make you rich, if you want to be rich you should be a banker.

I do my work because it makes me happy and I like learning and discovering new things but it would be nicer to have some more money.

As the others say, no one goes into science for the money (although it pays enough money to be comfortable). We’ve all chosen to do something we find interesting and enjoyable rather than just do a job for the money.
