      So the idea about the ear wax is more about developing a method to demonstrate how variations in your DNA are found (and so that you can have some fun in the class room instead of listening to a lecture).

      They have already done a fair bit of work on earwax and is why I chose to model this trait for the method. What they found is that Ear wax is one of the few physical traits in the body that is solely determined by a single base change in DNA (well almost, it covers about 95% of all variation). Other physical traits, such as eye colour, is determined by multiple variants within your DNA and hence, why developing a method for another trait would be a bit more difficult.
