  Well some people think the world is going to end this year due to the Myan calender ending but there has been about 514 leap years since Caesar created it in 45BC. Without the extra day every 4 years we would now be in August 2013. The Myan calendar did not account for the leap year so if the world was going to end, it would have happened 8 months ago!
  
  I don’t think the word is every going to end…. unless the sun exploded taking us with it! But that’s not likely right now!

  I think worrying too much about when the world will end distracts us from the task of sorting things out in the present and for the near future. But definitely not this whole 2012 stuff, that’s just numerology!

  The whole 2012 thing is nonsense, as the others say. The world will definitely end in about 4-5 Billion years. At this point, our sun will have used up much of its fuel and will start expanding, possibly becoming what is called a red giant. It may either swell up and actually consume the Earth, or just get close and blow away our atmosphere, cooking anything left on the planet.
  
  It is highly unlikely that anyone will be around to see this though, 4 Billion years is a very long time, and I would think by then we’d either have colonised other planets, evolved into some very different thing or, (unfortunately much more likely), found some way to wipe ourselves out. As JArvist says above, the best thing to do is to look to what we can do now to make the world better for ourselves and for our children.
